Respiratory factors in compensation
Rate and depth of respirations.
Renal substances conserved/eliminated during compensation
Hydrogen ions and bicarbonate.
Respiratory compensation for metabolic acidosis
Hyperventilation lowers PaCO2 and helps increase plasma pH.
Renal compensation for respiratory acidosis
The kidneys secrete H+ and reabsorb/retain HCO3−, helping increase plasma pH.
Renal action in acidosis
Regenerate and retain bicarbonate and remove hydrogen.
Renal action in alkalosis
Retain hydrogen and remove bicarbonate.
Timeframe of renal acid/base changes
Over hours to days.
Respiratory response to acute decrease in pH
Respiratory rate and depth increase to blow off/remove CO2.
Response to acute rise in pH
CO2 combines with water and changes to carbonic acid in an effort to return pH toward normal.
Effect of alkalosis on the renal system
It depresses the renal system.
Effect of increased respiratory rate and depth on pH
It increases CO2 removal.
Relatively slow compensation system
Renal compensation, which can take hours to days to make changes.
