Regulation
Laws imposed by the government.
Indirect Taxation

Specific Tax
A fixed amount of tax imposed on a good or service.
Ad Valorem Tax
A tax based on the value of a good or service.
Minimum Pricing
A policy that imposes a price above the market equilibrium to discourage harmful consumption.
Maximum Pricing
A policy that imposes a price below the market equilibrium to make services more affordable.
Pollution Permits
Tradeable permits used to manage and limit pollution activities by allowing firms to pollute.
State Provision
Government provision of services in areas where private firms are unwilling to operate.
Information Provision
Government efforts to educate individuals about services and products in order to close the information gap.
Demerit Goods
Goods that are considered harmful and whose consumption is discouraged by taxation or regulation.
Merit Goods
Goods that are beneficial to consumers and are promoted through government provision or subsidy.
