Appendicular Skeleton
The part of the skeleton that includes the thoracic and pelvic limbs.
Thoracic Limb
The upper limb or forelimb of animals.
Scapula
The most proximal bone of the thoracic limb, flat and triangular with a prominent spine.
Humerus
The long bone of the upper arm, forming the shoulder joint.
Ulna
One of the two bones in the antebrachium, forming the major portion of the elbow joint.
Radius
The main weight-bearing bone of the antebrachium.
Carpal Bones
Two rows of bones in the wrist of the animal.
Metacarpal Bones
Bones that extend from the carpal bones to the proximal phalanges of the digits.
Phalanges
Bones that make up the digits, typically consisting of 2-3 bones per digit.
Pelvic Limb
The lower limb or hind limb of animals.
Pelvis
The os coxae, a fused structure made of three bones.
Ilium
The cranial-most bone of the pelvis.
Ischium
The caudal-most pelvic bone, supporting the weight during sitting.
Pubis
The smallest pelvic bone, forming part of the pelvic floor.
Femur
The long bone of the thigh, forming the stifle joint with the patella and tibia.
Patella
The kneecap, largest sesamoid bone in the body.
Fabellae
Small sesamoid bones located in the proximal gastrocnemius muscle.
Tibia
The main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg.
Fibula
A thin bone parallel to the tibia, not weight-bearing.
Tarsal Bones
Bones of the hock, comprises two rows of short bones.
Metatarsal Bones
Similar in structure to metacarpal bones, usually four digits in the hind leg.
Visceral Skeleton
Bones that form within soft organs.
Os Cordis
A bone found in the heart of cattle and sheep.
Os Penis
A bone found in the penis of certain animals.
Os Rostri
A bone in the nose of swine, strengthening the snout.
Fibrous Joints
Immovable joints, such as those between skull bones.
Cartilaginous Joints
Joints that are slightly movable, like intervertebral joints.
Synovial Joints
Freely movable joints, such as shoulder and stifle joints.
Articular Cartilage
Thin, smooth layer of hyaline cartilage covering joint surfaces.
Synovial Fluid
Fluid that lubricates the joint surfaces in synovial joints.
Flexion
A movement that decreases the angle between body parts.
Extension
A movement that increases the angle between body parts.
Adduction
Movement of a limb toward the midline of the body.
Abduction
Movement of a limb away from the midline of the body.
Rotation
Movement around an axis.
Circumduction
A circular movement that combines flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction.
Ball & Socket Joint
A joint that allows extensive movement in multiple directions.
Trochlea
A smooth articular groove in the femur where the patella rides.
Epicondyles
Knobs on the medial and lateral surfaces of the condyle.
Olecranon Process
Forms the point of the elbow where the triceps muscle attaches.
Tibial Condyles
Articulating surfaces on the proximal end of the tibia.
Lateral Malleolus
Knob on the outside of the ankle formed by the fibula.
Calcaneal Tuberosity
The point of the hock where the fibular tarsal bone projects.
Cannon Bones
The large metacarpal bone in horses that supports their weight.
Splint Bones
Two smaller vestigial metacarpal bones in horses that do not support weight.
