Resolution
A term that is important for understanding microscopes; it refers to the ability to distinguish between two objects.
0.2 microns or more
If a microscope had a resolution of 0.2 microns, objects must be this far apart to be seen as two distinct objects.
Light Microscopes
Microscopes that use light to see an image.
Brightfield Light Microscope
A type of light microscope that produces a darker image on a light background.
Darkfield Light Microscope
A type of light microscope that has a light stop, so you see light images on a dark background.
Electron Microscopes
Microscopes that use electron beams to visualize images.
Transmission Electron Microscope
The type of electron microscope most ideal for visualizing structures within a specimen.
Scanning Electron Microscope
The type of electron microscope most ideal for visualizing the 3D surface.
Condenser Lens
The part of the microscope that focuses light on the specimen.
Diaphragm
The part of the microscope that adjusts the level of light.
Objective Lens and Eyepiece Lens
Lenses that work together to get the total magnification in a compound microscope.
4 times
The magnification of the scanning objective lens.
10 times
The magnification of the low power objective lens.
40 times
The magnification of the high power objective lens.
10 times
The magnification of the eyepiece lens.
Coarse Focus Knob
The knob which moves the stage more dramatically to help with focusing
Fine Focus Knob
The knob which moves the stage in smaller increments to help with focusing
Wet Mount
What do you call the action of putting a drop or two of a water sample onto a slide with a coverslip on top?
Lens Paper
The type of paper you must use to clean microscope lenses.
