Switch
A networking device that connects all network devices together on a local network. Typically done using only a MAC Address at Layer 2.
MAC Address
A unique physical address stored in a switch's table to direct data packets.
Router
A device that routes or forwards data from one network to another based on IP addresses.
Firewall
A security device designed to prevent unauthorized access to a private network.
Access Control List (ACL)
Rules on a router that define what data packets can enter or leave a network.
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) / Intrusion Protection System (IPS)
A tool that alerts a network admin of potential attacks.
Load Balancer
A device that evenly distributes data activity among multiple servers.
Quality of Service (QOS)
A feature that prioritizes bandwidth for certain applications and devices.
