Anatomy
The study of structure and shape of the body and its parts, and the relationships between those parts.
Physiology
The study of how the body and its parts work or function.
Standard Anatomical Position
The constant reference position where the body is erect, palms are facing forward (anterior), feet and toes are facing forward (anterior), and thumbs are pointing away from the body (lateral).
Superior (cranial)
Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above. (Lake Superior is UP)
Inferior (caudal)
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below. (Being Inferior is bad, so it goes down)
Ventral (anterior)
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of.
Posterior (dorsal)
Toward or at the back of the body; behind. (Dorsol fins are at the back of the dolphins body)
Medial
Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side of.(medial-me ddle-middle
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side. (Lateral pass away from the midline)
Intermediate
Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.
Proximal
Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk. (Approximate origin)
Distal
Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk. (Distant)
Superficial (external)
Toward or at the body surface. (External-skin)
Deep (internal)
Away from the body surface. (Deep in the body surface)
Median (midsagittal) plane
A longitudinal plane that divides the body or organ into equal right and left sections down the midline. (Midsagittal-”mid”, Median=middle)
Frontal plane
A longitudinal plane (also called coronal) that divides the body or organ into anterior and posterior portions. (Frontal-Front “Front & Back”)
Transverse plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body or organ into superior and inferior portions. (Trans goes up and down)
Axillary
Anatomical regional term referring to the armpit.
(Axe Body Spray- Armpits)
Brachial
Anatomical regional term referring to the arm (upper arm).
(Body brackets out to create upper arm)
Antecubital
Anatomical regional term referring to the anterior surface of the elbow (elbow bend).
(Elbow is a cube)
Antebrachial
Anatomical regional term referring to the forearm.
(Anti Bracket of the upper arm=forearm)
Olecranal
Anatomical regional term referring to the posterior point of the elbow. (The back of a Cranes Elbow)
Carpal
Anatomical regional term referring to the wrist.
(Catch a carp with your wrist)
Crural
Anatomical regional term referring to the lower leg. (crawl with lower leg)
Sural
Anatomical regional term referring to the calf (posterior leg). (Sur has great calves)
Popliteal
Anatomical regional term referring to the posterior area of the knee. (Knee’s pop a little)
Patellar
Anatomical regional term referring to the anterior surface of the knee. (Pat has good knees)
Plantar
Anatomical regional term referring to the sole or bottom of the foot. (Plant your foot on the bottom)
Calcaneal
Anatomical regional term referring to the heel. (neal-heel)
Buccal
Anatomical regional term referring to the cheek. (Bucee’s cheeks)
Mental
Anatomical regional term referring to the chin. (Hit in the mental-chin)
Cervical
Anatomical regional term referring to the neck region. (Serve your neck)
Coxal
Anatomical regional term referring to the hip. (Mr. Cox has huge hips)
Inguinal
Anatomical regional term referring to the groin. “guin=groin”
Perineal
Anatomical regional term referring to the area between the anus and external genitalia. penis
Hallux
Anatomical regional term referring to the big toe. (Big toe hall)
Pollex
Anatomical regional term referring to the thumb. (Thumbs up poll)
Dorsal Body Cavity
Body cavity subdivision that includes the cranial cavity (housing the brain) and the vertebral cavity (housing the spinal cord).
Ventral Body Cavity
Body cavity subdivision containing internal visceral organs, subdivided into the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
Meninges
The protective membranes surrounding the dorsal body cavity, consisting of the Dura Mater, Arachnoid Mater, and Pia Mater. (brain membranes)
Visceral Serosa
The inner layer of serous membrane that directly covers the external surface of organs within ventral body cavities.
Parietal Serosa
The outer layer of serous membrane that lines the walls of ventral body cavities. (Parent protect with lines of walls)
Pericardium
The serous membrane structure that surrounds the heart. (Cardium-heart)
Pleura
The serous membrane structure that surrounds the lungs within the thoracic cavity. lung lungs
Peritoneum
The serous membrane structure that lines the abdominal cavity and covers its organs. (oneum abs)
