Gerontology
A field of science focused on understanding the process of aging and the challenges encountered as seniors grow older.
Social Gerontology
A specialized field of gerontology that examines the social (and sociological) aspects of aging.
Cohort
A group of people who share a statistical or demographic trait.
Senescence
The aging process, encompassing biological, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual changes.
Ageism
Discrimination based on age, typically manifesting as prejudice against older individuals.
Gerontocracy
A type of social structure wherein power is held by a society’s oldest members.
Disengagement Theory
A theory suggesting that withdrawing from society and social relationships is a natural part of growing old.
Activity Theory
A theory that posits activity levels and social involvement are key to happiness in older age.
Continuity Theory
The idea that the elderly make choices to maintain consistency in their personalities and relationships.
Thanatology
The systematic study of death and dying.
Modernization Theory
A theory proposing that industrialization and modernization are the primary causes for the elderly losing power and influence in society.
Exchange Theory
A rational choice approach suggesting increased dependence as individuals age and a greater need to comply with others.
Cultural Frameworks of Aging
Includes biological, psychological, social, and cultural perspectives on the aging process.
Quality of Life
The standard of health, comfort, and happiness experienced by an individual or group, especially among the elderly.
Aging Generations
Refers to the social and structural impacts of different generations, including Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha.
