Urbanization
Movement of people from rural areas to cities.
Exurb
A semi-rural district located beyond the suburbs.
Single market manufacturing
A specialized production that focuses on only 1 or 2 customers, typically located close to them.
First Urban Revolution
Agricultural and socioeconomic innovations that led to the rise of early cities.
Concentric Zone Model
Burgess’ model which describes urban land as organized in concentric circles.
Primate City Rule
A city that is much larger than the next largest city in the country.
Gravity Model
The concept that larger places interact more with their surroundings due to attraction factors.
Dependency Theory
The idea that the rich world became wealthy by exploiting developing countries.
Urban Hearth Areas
Regions where large cities first developed, such as Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Bulk-reducing industry
An industry in which raw materials weigh more than the final product, thus located near resources.

A model explaining the location of cities in relation to markets, suggesting people travel varying distances for goods.
