the Weimar Republic definition

This was the name given to the Germany after the kaiser had abdicated in November 1918. This was a time of dispair and hope for Germany. At first the country faced lots of chaos but under stress Mann there was some stability

Tell me about 1919 August

The Weimar constitution is finalised. The reichstag controls taxation and is chosen by the people therefore the more important house of the 2. The constitution was democratic and the age was reduced from 25 to 20. A weakness was that proportional representation there was often no majority governments.

Signed in 1919 as a peace agreement. German people disliked the politicians for signing it and it caused economic and political problems

Faced a lot of opposition and disliked by the left wing who wanted Germany to be a communist like Russia and disliked by the right wing who wanted the monarchy back

World war 1 ends. The kaiser abdicated and Germany became a country without a monarch ( a repubic )

What happened in 1919 January

The separcisist uprising happens ( the sparcisist revolt) a violent left wing communist rebellion that took place in Berlin. Lead by Luxembourg and leibeneke. They call for a general strike because ebert the chancellor sacks the chief of police, a liked officer. Ebert calls soldiers who still have weapons called friekorps to stop the rebellion and kill the leaders.

tell me about the kapp putsch

Happened in 1920. Eberts government is struggling to control the friekorps. They turned against them as they disliked democracy and the signing of the treaty. The friekorps march to Berlin to do an uprising of the government and the government recieves no help from the leader of the army so they flee Berlin. Friekorps gain control of Berlin, declaring a new government. The government tell people to go on strike and they do. With rebellion collapsed they return to Berlin. In short it was a failed attempt to overthrow the government

Tell me about the French occupation of the rurh

In 1923 the German government is bankrupt after the First World War. They also have to pay heavy reparations to the allies. Germany can’t afford to pay the debt. Many German workers go on strike and the French occupy the rurh with their own workers. The rurh being occupied by the French puts Germany in more financial wreckage as it contains 80 percent of coal iron and steel reserves. As well as many factories. As a result unemployment goes up and shortages continue.

Tell me about hyperinflation

In 1923 and a goods shortage means prices rise a lot. Government decisions make inflation worse. They resort to printing more money, but it makes worse as more prices rise more money is printed and the over way round. Normal living becomes impossible as you had to bring money in wheelbarrows for small amounts of food. German marks become worthless. So foreign suppliers start refusing German marks.

This plan was in 1924 and it was an agreement to help Germany pay its reparations. Germanys yearly payments were reduced and spread out. Germany also used loans to repay reparations. They also borrowed money from the USA. This helped the economy and improved relations with other countries

this took place in 1925 and was a series of agreements to help Germanys relations with other countries. Germany agreed to keep boarders with Germany and Belgium where they were ( not take any land back) . They also agreed to not attack or invade each other.

In 1926 Germany joined the League of Nations. This was an international organisation set up after ww1 to prevent more wars. It improved germanys reputation as it showed they wanted peace. They also had a voice in council so they could make important decisions. They also had better national relations

This was a promise between countries in 1926 to say they won’t use war to solve there problems with other countries. Germany signed this in 1928 it showed Germany was trying to be peaceful and cooperative with other countries.

In 1929 the young plan is happens. This was an agreement about the reparations Germany had to pay from ww1. They were reduced from 6.6 billion pounds to 2 billion pounds and Germany was given a further 59 years to pay it off.
