Voluntary health agency
An organization administered by an autonomous board that collects funds and expends money for providing care, health education, and research work.
Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS)
A voluntary humanitarian organization established in 1920 under the Indian Red Cross Society Act, headquartered in New Delhi.
Fundamental Principles of IRCS
The seven guiding principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.
Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh
Also known as the Indian Leprosy Association, founded in 1950 for the treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients.
Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW)
Established in 1952, it is the largest agency promoting development services, legislation, and rights for children in India.
Tuberculosis Association of India
Established in 1939, one of the oldest voluntary organizations dedicated to the prevention, control, and treatment of TB.
Family Planning Association of India (FPAI)
A non-governmental organization established in 1949 and headquartered in Mumbai, focused on reproductive health and family planning.
World Health Organization (WHO)
A specialized agency of the United Nations established on 7th April 1948, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
World Health Day
Observed annually on 7th April, marking the anniversary of the founding of the WHO.
Sex ratio
The demographic measure of the number of females per 1000 males in a given population.
Total dependency ratio
The ratio of the dependent population (young and old) to the working-age population, expressed per 100 people of working age.
Maternal mortality rate
The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, from any cause related to the pregnancy.
Birth rate
The number of live births occurring in a population during one year per 1,000 population.
Infant mortality rate
The ratio of deaths of children under one year of age to the total number of live births in a given year.
Health information system
A mechanism for the collection, processing, analysis, and transmission of information for health services, research, and training.
Census
A complete counting of the population conducted every 10 years, providing data on age, sex, literacy, and occupation.
Sample Registration System (SRS)
A system providing reliable annual estimates of birth, death, and infant mortality rates using dual record sampling.
Record linkage
Combining separate health records from different times or places for the same individual to create a complete medical history.
Epidemiological surveillance
The ongoing, systematic collection and analysis of health data to spot disease patterns and implement public health actions.
Health team
A group of trained medical and non-medical personnel with different skills who share a common goal in providing healthcare.
District Public Health Nursing Officer (DPHNO)
A nursing official responsible for the managerial, supervisory, and educational oversight of all nursing staff in a district.
Health Assistant (Female)
A health supervisor, also known as a Lady Health Visitor, overseeing a population of 30,000 in rural plains or 20,000 in hilly areas.
