peripheral nervous system
general visceral motor port of the PNS is the autonomic nervous system (ANS)
ANS has 2 divisions - parasympathetic and sympathetic
exteroceptors
sensitive to stimuli arising from outside the body
at or near body surfaces: receptos for touch, pressure, pain, and temperature
interoceptors
receive stimuli from internal viscera
monitor changes in chemical concentration, taste stimuli, stretching of tissues, and temperature
proprioceptors (interoceptor)
located in skeletal muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments, monitor degree of stretch
mechanoreceptors (exteroceptor)
touch, pressure, stretch, vibration, itch
thermoreceptor (exteroceptors)
respond to temperature changes
chemoreceptors (interoceptors)
respond to chemicals in solution
photoreceptors (exteroreceptors)
respond to light; located in light
nociceptors (interoceptors)
respond to harmful stimuli that result in pain (respond to tissue damage)
