“I” (like in eel) → picture two eels upright (upright because of the “i”)

“U” (like in “UNO” or in “ooh… ahhh!”) → find U shape with hat (line above) to remember

“E” (like in “egg”) → think of exotic bird laying exotic eggs (both words have the sound of the kana)

“O” (like in “oh” or “origami”) → think of two O’s at bottom

“Ka” (like in “karma”) → looks like a mosquito (also mosquito means “か (ka)” in japanese)

“Ki” (like in “key”) → looks like a key

“Ku” (like in "cuckoo") → remember it as a cucko birds mouth saying “ku-ku”

“Ke” (like in “kelp”) → looks like 2 kelp pieces

“Ko” (like in “coin” or “cohabitating”) → think of two co-habiting worms

“Sa” (like in “salsa”) → looks like someone stirring salsa bowl

“Shi” (like “shee” in “sheep”) → remember a giant shepherd's crook used to herd sheep

“Su” (like in “suit”) → looks like swing doing a loop and guy falling off: hes going to sue somebody

“Nu” (like in “noodles”) → looks like noodles BUT: many other look similar → this one is perfectly smooth and bendable and has a loop at bottom right like noodles do

“Ne” (like in “Nelly”) → think of a cat named Nelly → this one is also similar to others, but has sharp corners on the right (unlike the “Nu”, which is more round and bendable) and has a cat tail loop at the bottom right / + “neko” means cat

“No” (like in “nose”) → looks like a pig nose

“Ha” (like in “haha”) → looks like uppercase H and a lowercase a together

“Hi” (like the english “he”) → think of a guy (he) with a big nose

“Fu” (sound like hu / fu → softly blown-out version of foo in "fool," or sometimes hoo in "hoop") → think of someone dancing with a hula hoop ring on head, making their neck weird

“He” (like in “help” or “Helens”) → think of a mountain; theres a famous one named “St. Helens”
