Chronic Pain
Pain that persists for 3 months or longer than the expected period of healing.
Behavioral pain measures
Tools used for assessment including FLACC, CHEOPS, TPPPS, PPPRS, PPPM, and COMFORT.
Self-report pain-rating scales
Assessment tools intended for children older than 4 years using simple, concrete words.
Numerical rating scale (NRS)
A multidimensional pain measure that uses a scale from 0 to 10.
Multidimensional measures
Pain assessment tools that include the 0 to 10 NRS, APPT (Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool), and PPQ (Pediatric Pain Questionnaire).
Nonpharmacologic management
Pain relief strategies such as distraction, relaxation, guided imagery, cutaneous stimulation, containment, swaddling, nonnutritive sucking, and kangaroo care.
Complementary pain medicine types
Categories of alternative medicine including biologically based, manipulative treatments, energy based, mind-body techniques, and alternative medical systems.
Pharmacologic management categories
Methods of pain control using nonopioids, opioids, and coanalgesic drugs.
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)
A method of pharmacologic administration where the patient manages their own pain relief timing.
Factors for chronic and recurrent pain assessment
Evaluations focused on physical, emotional, social, and school functioning.
Burn pain
A complex state of pain with multiple components that is difficult and challenging to control.
Cancer pain symptoms
The most prevalent symptom in children with cancer, often relieved with a combination of opioids and adjuvant analgesics.
Indicators of untreated pain in infants
Evaluation categories consisting of physiologic indicators and behavioral indicators.
Recurrent headaches
Pain states that may be caused by tension, dental braces, weakness of eye muscles, sinusitis, epilepsy, sleep apnea, or injury.
Kangaroo care
A specific nonpharmacologic management technique used in pediatric pain care.
