All living things are made of one or more cells, the smallest units that can carry out the functions of life.

Metabolism

Performs chemical reactions

Anabolism

Building larger molecules from smaller ones

catabolism

breaking larger molecules down into smaller ones

Growth

They increase in size and in number of cells when anabolism exceeds catabolism.

Excretion

They remove waste products from metabolic processes so these toxic substances don’t accumulate

Responsiveness (irritability)

They sense and respond to changes in their environment called stimuli (sight, touch, pain)

Systemic

Studying all the structures in the head and neck region

Surface

studying all structures in the head and neck region ( nerves, vessels, bones, and muscles.)

Gross anatomy

Examining the hear, lungs or stomach during dissection

Microscopic anatomy

Requires a microscope to see the structure ( histology and cytology)
