Hand, Power, Pneumatic
The 3 tool classifications:
Dead-blow mallet
Has sand in the head to absorb blows. Type of hammer.
Framing Hammer
Also known as ripping hammer, straight claw hammer. Has a waffle tip. Not good for scenery.
Curved-Claw Hammer
Smooth tip. Has a curved end for ripping up nails. Lighter and shorter than Framing Hammer.
Tack Hammer
good for big decorative elements, such as buttons on a fancy upholstered sofa.
Crow bar
Breaking things, bending things, take out nails. Has Hex cross section in the middle.
Pry Bar (Wonderbar)
More commonly used than a crow bar. Thin, used for ripping up various things. Has a little claw called a shear.
Compass
Used for drawing circles. Denotes radius.
Trammel points
A set of two clamps that can be attached to the edge of a board. One clamp has a steel point and the other clamp has a pencil, which is used to draw large circles.
Utility knife/box cutter
An all purpose knife used for cutting.
Tape measure
a length of tape or thin flexible metal, marked at intervals for measuring.
Framing square
Used to make squares. Has a 90 degree angle.
Speed Square
Look like a right triangle. Can mark any angle quickly with this tool.
Combination Square
Has level built in. Has all the different angles. Movable ruler. Can make lines a set distance away.
Tri-Square
Not very common. Has all the aspects of other angle tools.
Scratch Awl
A sharp-pointed tool for marking wood or metal.
Philips Head Screwdriver
used to loosen or tighten cross-head screws. Has a cross on the driver.
Flat head/ Slotted Screwdriver
For slotted screws. Can be very annoying to use.
Nut driver
tube on the inside for bolt to go into. used to tighten nuts onto bolts.
End nippers
Used to pull things out of thing. Can also be used for cutting staples off of something.
Slip joint pliers
Vaguely adjustable. Slips through the joint.
Linesman pliers
Used for gripping small objects, to cut and bend wire and cable. Typically used by electricians.
Wire rope cutters
Cuts wire one at a time. ONLY for cutting wire rope.
Vise grip
Adjustable clamping pliers that can be locked on work. Comes in many different shapes and sizes.
Channel lock pliers
Many different channels for the teeth to move and lock into.
Pipe wrench
Grips around pipes. Tightens after going onto object.
Adjustable wrench
Turning various size nuts and bolts
Box/Combination Wrench
Two different sides. open and closed box wrench sides. Good for tight spaces.
Ratcheting Wrench
Needs a socket. Can change direction.
Socket
Cylinder that is used with a Ratcheting Wrench.
Push saw
Push it to cut. Doesn't cut on the pull.
Japanese Pull saw
Pull to cut. Flexible, good for details.
Hack saw
Typically for cutting metal

Keyhole Saw
Small to start in small spaces.
Spirit Level
Tubes filled with spirits that have a small bubble in them to see if things are level.
Bevel gauge
gauges bevels. Used to match and double angles.
Hand held and Cabinet Based tools
Two Classifications for how tools are used.
Screw gun drill
Can make holes, screw in nails. Can put many different bits into the end. Different speed.
Import driver screw gun
Has a little hammer inside to make screws go in easier. Used often and is the best tool of its nature to put in screws.
non power drill
Twist by hand. Came before screw guns. Very seldom used now.
Circular saw
Has a circular blade. Meant to cut straight lines. Hand held.
Jigsaw
Has as a tiny, thin blade that is meant for cutting circles or curves. Hand held
Router
Extremely dangerous tool. Has Bearings that follow the wood exactly. Moves very quickly and has a lot of power. Great for cutting the skin of flats with angles.
Belt sander
uses a moving abrasive belt to smooth large surface areas.
Random Orbital sander
Spins, but also shakes base in a random pattern.
Oscillating tool
Can put many different tops on to be used for many different things. Shakes back and forth.
Hammer drill
Built to dent in and then remove dust. Good for drilling through concrete. Wall powered, so does not have automatic stop.
Angle grinder
Small portable hand held grinder used to grind away metal or to sharpen some hand tools. Extremely dangerous. Wears down the blade easily
Reciprocating saw
Also known as Sawzall. Will cut through virtually anything and is very powerful.
Laser Level
Battery powered Level.
Spindle Sander
Cabinet based. Moves up and down as it spins. Meant for interior curves and has different sized cylinders.

Combination sander
Giant belt and Random Orbital sander. Cabinet based
Band saw
A cutting tool with a thin, long, flexible blade that always spin down. Cabinet based. Great for cutting curves, but can't do big pieces or interior curves.
drill press.
Both drills and presses. More precise. Lots of power. Can punch through things way quicker.
Compound Powered Miter Box Saw
Also known as Chop Saw. Set to known angle. Meant for cutting wood. Can make Compound Angles.
Table Saw
a circular saw mounted under a table or bench so that the blade projects up through a slot. Meant to cut straight lines. Safest tool in the shop.
Bench grinder
has stone discs. Is basically a sander for metal. Can put in a wire brush to get rid of rust or to give wood an "old" vibe.
Lathe
machine tool for shaping metal or wood. Not used often. has the same effect as those apple skinners put for wood.
Radial arm saw
Has an arm and can turn. Most commonly used for straight lines. Came before table saws. Very dangerous.
