Loose connective tissue
The most common type of connective tissue, acting as a packing material between other tissues, providing support and flexibility.
Dense connective tissue
Connective tissue containing tightly packed collagen fibers, forming tendons and ligaments.
Adipose tissue
A type of connective tissue that stores energy as triglycerides within specialized cells called adipocytes.
Cartilage
A strong, flexible connective tissue that provides cushioning at joints, with types including hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic cartilage.
Bone
A mineralized connective tissue providing structural support and protection, containing bone marrow for blood cell production.
Blood
Considered a connective tissue due to its fluid matrix and circulating cells, including red blood cells and white blood cells.
Ground substance
The gel-like matrix in connective tissues that contains large molecules like glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
Collagen fibers
Thick, bundled fibers made of the protein collagen, providing high tensile strength and resisting pulling forces.
Elastic fibers
Fibers that allow tissues to return to their original shape after stretching, found in blood vessel walls, lungs, and ear cartilage.
Reticular fibers
Thin fibers forming a supportive network within connective tissues.
Hyaline cartilage
A type of cartilage found on joint surfaces, providing smooth movement.
Fibrocartilage
A tough type of cartilage providing strong support and shock absorption, found in intervertebral discs.
Elastic cartilage
A flexible type of cartilage providing support in structures like the ear.
Fibroblasts
The cells responsible for producing connective tissue fibers.
Dense regular connective tissue
A subtype of dense connective tissue with fibers arranged in parallel bundles, found in tendons and ligaments.
Dense irregular connective tissue
A subtype of dense connective tissue with fibers arranged in random directions, providing strength and resistance to tearing in the skin.
