Lewis Structure
A diagram that shows an atom's valence electrons using dots around the element symbol.
Valence Electrons
The electrons in the outermost shell of an atom.
Group 1 Elements
Main-group elements that have 1 valence electron.
Group 2 Elements
Main-group elements that have 2 valence electrons.
Group 13 Elements
Main-group elements that have 3 valence electrons.
Group 14 Elements
Main-group elements that have 4 valence electrons.
Group 15 Elements
Main-group elements that have 5 valence electrons.
Group 16 Elements
Main-group elements that have 6 valence electrons.
Group 17 Elements
Main-group elements that have 7 valence electrons.
Group 18 Elements
Main-group elements that have 8 valence electrons.
Octet Rule
The rule stating that most atoms tend to become more stable with 8 electrons in their outer shell.
Single Bond
A bond represented by a line between two atoms showing 1 shared pair of electrons.
Double Bond
A bond represented by two lines between atoms showing 2 shared pairs of electrons.
Triple Bond
A bond represented by three lines between atoms showing 3 shared pairs of electrons.
Lone Pair
A pair of electrons that is not being shared in a bond and remains associated with one atom.
Bonding Electrons
Electrons that are shared between atoms.
Duet
The electron target of 2 electrons that hydrogen aims for because its first shell can hold only 2 electrons.
