Total Exam Time
The final exam is to be completed within a period of 50 minutes.
Accel Exam Format
A version of the test containing 70 questions, including a focus on Literary Terms and The Crucible.
Honors Exam Format
A version of the test containing 60 questions, including Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension and A Streetcar Named Desire.
Final Exam Weight
The exam constitutes 10% of the overall grade for the year.
Transcendentalism
A branch of the Romantic movement (mid to late 1800s) focusing on the individual, intuition as man's greatest power, nature as inspiration, and the Oversoul (convergence of Man, God, and Nature).
The Oversoul
A Transcendentalist concept representing the convergence of Man, God, and Nature.
Romanticism
A mid to late 1800s response to the Age of Reason based on emotion, individualism, and the picturesque, exotic, and mysterious.
Gothicism
A part of the Romantic movement focused on the dark side of human nature, dark themes, and psychological or spiritual motifs.
The Age of Reason
A 1700s to 1800s response to Puritanism (Enlightenment Literature) that values logic as man's greatest power and focuses on non-fiction.
Realism
A literary movement focused on the everyday realities of life.
McCarthyism
The 1950s Communist "witch hunts" led by Sen Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).
Folklore / Myths
Culture-specific stories that explain the unexplainable and teach cultural lessons.
Vernacular / Dialect
The language spoken in a particular region, such as the word "jawn" in the Philadelphia area.
Works Cited Alphabetization
Sources must be listed alphabetically by the author's last name; if no author is present, list the source by title.
Hanging Indent
The specific indentation used on a Works Cited page for citations that extend beyond one line.
Novel Titles (MLA)
The correct emphasis for novel titles in MLA formatting is to ensure they are Italicized.
Academic Journal Articles (MLA)
The correct emphasis for article titles from an academic journal is to place them in quotes.
Running Header (MLA)
A header containing the author's last name and page number, placed in the top right corner inside the margin of every page.
Parenthetical Citation
Also known as an internal citation, it includes the author's last name and the page number, for example: (D'Antonio 9).
MLA Style Heading
Located in the top left corner outside the margin; includes Student Name, Teacher Name, Class, and Due Date (Day Month Year).
