Why did James Oglethorpe propose the colony of Georgia? What was banned in Georgia?

Oglethorpe had a friend who died in prison due to being thrown in for his debts. He proposed a new colony, Georgia, for debtors to go and be rehabilitated and farm for food. He also said it could act as a defense between Spain/France/Indians and South Carolina.

Georgia banned slavery, large estate holdings (Plantations), and alcohol.

Why did Georgia turn around on its slavery policy?

The people complained that they were becoming poorer than they were in England because they had no slaves, so Georgia changed the policy in 1751.

A preacher sent by Oglethorpe to make sure people were practicing Chrisitianity.

Why did John Wesley leave the colony?

He fell in love with one of the colonist’s daughter, but she married another. Wesley would then deny her communion and would flee the colony.

While it is debated if this was related to the marriage, it doesn’t matter as he still refused.
