Lipid Soluble Substance

A substance, such as oxygen gas, that can pass directly through cell membranes.

Transport Protein

A protein that binds a substance on one side of a membrane, undergoes a shape change, and releases the substance on the other side.

Active Transport

A type of transport that requires energy to move a substance from an area of low concentration to high concentration.

Insulin

A signal molecule that binds to a membrane receptor protein, causing a shape change and activating a signaling pathway without entering the cell.

Simple Diffusion

The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
