Aryepiglottic muscle
Constricts the laryngeal opening, protecting the airways.
Thyroepiglottis muscle
Dilates the laryngeal opening, opens the airways.
Cricothyroid Muscle
Lower border of thyroid to cricoid arch; supplied by the external laryngeal nerve.
Thyroarytenoid Muscles
Attached to the base of the muscular process of arytenoid cartilage and inner surface of thyroid in midline.
Thyromuscularis
Lengthen and adducts
Thyrovocalis
Tenses in conjunction with the cricothyroid contracting
Posterior Cricoarytenoid
Attached to posterior aspect of muscular process; only abductor of vocal ligaments.
Lateral Cricoarytenoid
Attached to anterior aspect of the muscular process; adductor of vocal ligaments.
Transverse Arytenoid
Attached between posterior aspect of arytenoid cartilages; only unpaired muscle; adductor of vocal ligaments.
Oblique Arytenoid
Attached obliquely between posterior aspect of arytenoid cartilages; adductor of vocal ligaments.
All nerves supplying the larynx
Branches of the vagus nerve (CN X).
Nervus laryngeus inferior
Inferior laryngeal nerve.
Nervus vagus
Vagus nerve.
Nervus laryngeus superior
Superior laryngeal nerve.
Nervus laryngeus recurrens
Recurrent laryngeal nerve.
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the Aryepiglottic muscle
What is the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of the Thyroepiglottis muscle
What innervates the cricothyroid muscle
Supplied by external laryngeal nerve, ONLY ONE!
What is the thyroartenoid muscle attached too?
Attached to the base of muscular process of arytenoid cartilage and inner surface of thyroid in midline
• Thyromuscularis
• Thyrovocalis
What is the post cricoarytenoid attached too?
Attached to posterior aspect of muscular process
What is the Lateral Cricoarytenoid attached too?
Attached to anterior aspect of the muscular process
Where does the Transverse Arytenoid attach?
Attached between posterior
Where does the Oblique Arytenoid attach?
Attached obliquely between
Look at the nerve supply
What is the revus laryngeaus superior and superior laryngeal nerve?
The recurrent laryngeal nerve is a branch of the vagus nerve that innervates most of the laryngeal muscles, while the superior laryngeal nerve divides into the internal and external branches, supplying sensation and motor function respectively to the larynx.
What is the nervus laryngeus recurrens and recurrent laryngeal nerve
A branch of the vagus nerve responsible for innervating most laryngeal muscles, crucial for phonation.
Laryngoscopic View of Larynx
What is this a view of?
Larynx
Look at the vocal ligament positions and try and describe what they’re doing at each stage.
The vocal ligaments adjust their tension and position during phonation, impacting pitch and sound production as they open and close.
Look at this diagram and try and label
What happens when vocal cords open and close?
