Properties of water
It’s polar
Strong cohesion
High surface tension
It is a solvent
A metabolite
Large latent heat of vaporisation
High specific heat capacity
What does polar mean?
One pole (end) is slightly negatively charged and one pole is slightly positively charged. It has no overall charge.
Why is water a solvent?
It can form hydrogen bonds with other polar molecules and ions, dissolving them.
Why is water a metabolite?
It takes part in many reactions either as a product or substrate. It’s a reactant in photosynthesis but a product in respiration
Why does water have strong cohesion?
It can from hydrogen bonds with other water molecules. Slightly negatively charged oxygen of one molecule is attracted to slightly positive hydrogen of another water molecule
What does large latent heat of evaporation mean?
Water can absorb lots of heat energy before it becomes a gas.
What does high specific heat capacity mean?
Water can absorbs a lot of heat energy before it changes temperature
