Rescue
Saving us from danger
God rescues people from torment in Hell and eternal separation from God by sending his Son to be atoning sacrifice for our sins.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” -John 3:16
Redemption
Free from distress or harms.
The granting of salvation, occurs when you accept Christ as your savior, the Lord of your life, by faith. Accepting God’s gift of salvation includes yet another repentance. You repent of your sins by simply confessing them to God and turning from them to live in obedience.
“…that whoever believes in him…” - John 3:16
Renewal
To make us like new.
The work of the Holy Spirit who comes into your life when you accept Christ and begins to transform you from the inside, and you become a new creation and begin a life that will lead on into eternity.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” - 2 Cor. 5:17
“…he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” - Titus 3:5
What did Jesus Accomplish on the Cross?
He took sins upon himself.
He became a propitiation for our sins. - John 2:2
He died paying the penalty for sin.
He upheld the holiness of God
He demonstrated the love of God for us
Arguments against the resurrection
Jesus never died
The woman stole the body
The disciples stole the body
His enemies stole the body
They went to the wrong tomb
Jesus was replaced by an imposter
The Empty Tomb: What does it mean for us?
Jesus is who he said he was.
Jesus can do what he said he can do.
God is real he came to earth… for me.
Rescue, Redemption, Renewal is possible
God’s Grace
“Goodness towards those who deserve punishment.” (Grudem, 1992)
Mercy: Not getting what you deserve.
Grace: Getting what you don’t deserve
Grace and Mercy, Ephesians 2:1-10 and Romans 5:8
The purpose of the Law
The law was not given to make people good, but rather to show people how evil they are (Romans 3:20). ((Biblical Law))
Paul said that the Law only intensified human sin (Romans 5:20).
Ultimately is was given to show us our need for a savior.
Scripture is clear that living according to the law is not what saves us.
Faith: Definition
Grace must be responded to
Placing your trust in something: Faith fall, Faith Walk
Faith is only as valid as the object in which it is placed
Christian Faith is based in the historical fact of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
How is faith is different from feelings?
(Reference the professor jumping off the table)
In Christ
To be “in christ” means to place your “HOPE in Christ” (Eph. 1:12), or in other words, making Christ the object of your faith.
How Christianity Differs From Other Religions
Good works
Moral Life
Religious Faithfulness
Human effort to reach higher power of state of being.
Do vs. Done
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
What it teaches us: All humans, when measured against the divine Law, are found guilty of sin and fall short of the glory of God.
“For by the works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
What it teaches us: No human will attain a relationship with God by living by the letter of the law in the Old Testament.
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it — the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.”
What is teaches us: God revealed his righteousness through the sacrifice of Jesus, and his righteousness is available to all people by faith.
"Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all."
What this teaches us: That the messiah would carry our sorrows, be pierced for our sins and God put all our sins on him
“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
What this teaches us: Jesus commanded his followers to love even those who may do harm to them.
“So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
What this teaches us: Jesus teaches how necessary and important it is to forgive others.
“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
What this teaches us: Jesus’ followers are recognized by their love for one another.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
What this teaches us: Jesus Christ claims to be the only way to know God.

A Christian’s Love (Fit Check)

Jesus claims to be the only way
The decision
A decision to follow Christ launches you into a life time of spiritual growth and obedient service.
Mark 1:17 - And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Aspects of Renewal
Repentance: Sincere heartfelt regret
Redemption: From slavery to freedom
Propitiation: From wrath to mercy
Reconciliation: From enemy to friend
Adoption: You became a child of God
Sanctification: Progressive spiritual growth
Role of Obedience
Having a relationship with Jesus involves more than merely believing what Jesus said as truth, is also implies obedient living by loving God and others.
Wisdom includes being transformed from selfishness to selflessness.
Phil. 2: 3-4 - "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." (NIV)
