Prologue
Spoken by one or two characters before the chorus appears, usually providing background information.
Parodos
The song sung by the chorus as it makes its entrance.
Choragos
The leader of the chorus who interacts with the characters in the scenes.
Strophe
The movement of the chorus from right to left across the stage.
Antistrophe
The reaction to the strophe, moving from left to right across the stage.
Paean
A prayer of thanksgiving to Dionysus, honoring Greek plays.
Exodos
The final exit sung by the chorus, usually offering wisdom related to the play.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows more about the action than the characters on stage.
Unity of Time
All action of the play takes place within 24 hours.
Unity of Place
The action is limited to one setting; one unchanged scene is used.
Hubris
Arrogance or excessive pride, a characteristic of a tragic hero.
Hamartia
The tragic hero's transgression against the gods; a fatal flaw or error.
Anagnorisis
Recognition or discovery, where the hero changes from ignorance to knowledge.
Peripeteia
Reversal of fortune experienced by the tragic hero.
Nemesis
Fate that cannot be escaped, often faced by the tragic hero.
Catharsis
The purgation of emotions of pity and fear, leaving the viewer relieved after the tragic hero's journey.
