Process of packet switching

The data is divided into packets
each packet is given a sequence number
each packet will take a different route
a router controls the path a packet takes by selecting shortest path
packets arrive in dif order, 1nce packet arrive it will be reassembeled in the correct order

Benefits of packet switching

high data transmission rate
easy to expand package usage

Disadvantages of packet switching

Packets can be lost and need to be re sent

Serial data transmission

Data is sent 1 bit at a time
bits are sent one after another in a single stream

Work well over long distance
data arrive in correct oder
