River Erosion
The wearing away of the river's banks and beds.

V-shaped valley
Valleys vertically eroded due to fast flowing water often found in upland areas.

Interlocking spurs
A series of ridges projecting out on alternate sides of a valley and around which a river winds its course.

Waterfall
A cascade of water falling from a height, formed when a river or stream flows over a precipice or steep incline.

Differential erosion
When softer rocks are eroded at a higher rate than harder rocks.

Plunge Pool
A pool at the base of a waterfall formed by erosion

Undercutting
Wearing away the lower part of the rock.
Retreat
When the waterfall gradually moves back, leaving a gorge

Gorge
The straight sided valley which is left when a waterfall retreats.

Meander
A river bend.

Lateral erosion
Sideways erosion by a river on the outside of a meander channel.

River cliff
Steep outer edge of a meander where erosion is at its maximum.

Slip-off slope
A gentle slope at the inner bend of a river, made from the deposition of material.

Point bar
Another name for a slip-off slope

Deposition
Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations.

Ox-bow lake
An arc-shaped lake which has been cut off from a meandering river.

Flood plain
The flat, wide area of land along a river.

Natural Levee
An elevated landform composed of alluvium that parallels some streams and acts to confine their waters, except during floodstage.

Estuary
The tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream.
