Router
A device that forwards data packets between computer networks, making decisions based on the destination IP address.
Switch
A networking device that connects devices within a network and forwards traffic based on MAC addresses.
Access Point
A device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network, acting as a bridge with no IP address translation.
Unmanaged Switch
A switch that operates as a plug-and-play device without configuration options, typically providing all interfaces in one large VLAN.
Managed Switch
A larger switch that allows for remote management, configuring VLANs, prioritizing traffic, and offering redundancy.
Power over Ethernet (PoE)
A technology that allows network cables to carry electrical power along with data.
DOCSIS
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, a standard for transmitting data over cable television networks.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
A high-speed internet connection that operates over traditional telephone lines, providing reasonably good throughput.
Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
A device that converts fiber optic signals into Ethernet connections for home or office networking.
Network Interface Card (NIC)
A hardware component that allows devices to connect to a network, each with a unique Media Access Control address (MAC).
Layer 3 Switch
A switching device that also provides routing capabilities, typically operating at OSI layer 3.
VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
A subgroup within a local area network that is created to improve performance and security by segregating network traffic.
Firewall
A security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules.
Next-Generation Firewall
An advanced firewall that goes beyond traditional firewalls by inspecting application-layer traffic.
Port Mirroring
A method allowing network traffic to be monitored by duplicating that traffic and sending it to another interface.
RJ45 Connector
A standardized networking connector used for Ethernet connections.
Patch Panel
A panel used to manage and organize cable connections, allowing for easy reconfiguration and troubleshooting.
