MVC
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, the state agency responsible for driver licensing, vehicle registration, and safety regulation.
Driving Privilege
The concept that operating a motor vehicle is not a right and can be suspended for specific violations of state law.
Digital Driver License (DDL)
A secure license design featuring facial recognition technology to prevent identity theft; it uses a vertical format for motorists under 21 and is valid for 4 years.
GDL Program

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Blind Spots
Areas around a vehicle where a motorist cannot see using mirrors alone; these are checked by turning one's head.

The recommended hand positions on the outside rim of the steering wheel for normal driving to diminish the risk of injury if an airbag deploys.
Stopping Distance
The sum of perception distance, reaction distance, and braking distance; it is affected by speed, weather, vehicle weight, and brake/tire conditions.
35 mph (Hydroplaning)
The speed at which tires can begin to ride up on a film of water, causing the motorist to lose control of the vehicle on wet roads.
Three-Seconds-Plus Rule
A safe following distance formula used at any speed requiring a motorist to keep at least 3 seconds of travel time between their vehicle and the one in front.
25 feet (School Bus)
The minimum distance a motorist must stop away from a school bus with flashing red lights on a two-lane road or multi-lane highway separated only by lines.
Hero Campaign
A New Jersey initiative for designated drivers, emphasizing the responsibility of ensuring the safe transportation of friends or family who have been drinking alcohol.
BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration)
