What is the definition of an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Who invented the periodic table?
Dmitri Mendeleev invented the first version of the periodic table in 1869.
What is the purpose of the periodic table?
The periodic table organizes all known chemical elements based on their properties and atomic structure, making it easy to understand element relationships.
What are the three categories of elements?
Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids.
What is a compound?
A compound forms when different types of atoms are joined tightly together.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is the smallest unit of a substance that retains all the chemical properties of that substance, formed when two or more atoms bond together chemically.
What information does a chemical formula provide?
A chemical formula provides information about the types of elements in a compound and the number of atoms of each element.
What is the valency of magnesium?
The valency of magnesium, which is in group 2, is 2.
What happens to the properties of elements when they form a compound?
When elements bond to form a compound, they lose their individual properties and obtain entirely new properties.
What are monatomic ions?
Monatomic ions are ions consisting of only one atom.
How are cations named?
The name of a cation is the same as the name of the element from which it is derived.
What do you call the ion formed when an iodine atom gains one electron?
Iodide ion.
What is the formula for water?
H2O.
What are the two types of charges ions can have?
Ions can have positive charges (cations) or negative charges (anions).
What is sodium chloride commonly known as?
Common salt.
