Experimental
Controlled environment (experimental and control groups) a treatment is given (IV) to see effects (DV)
Correlation
Measures a relationship between two variables, no cause and effect, measured through observation, survey, case study, and meta analysis
Observation
Gathering information by watching participants and quantifying a factor (usually wanting to be naturalistic)
Case Study
Longitudinal and cross sectional in depth study of individuals
Meta Analysis
Combining information from multiple studies that already existed
What are the options for point 1, research method?
Experimental, observational, case study, and meta analysis
Operational Definition
A measurement of your variable (find how they quantify the variable in the study- use evidence, don't "make one up")
Independent Variable
The treatment given to the experimental group
Dependent variable
How the participants responds to the IV
Confounding Variable
Other factors that affect the dependent variable other than the initial treatment
Third variable
A third factor that is affecting both variables (a confounding variables that is attributed to the rise or decline of both)
Graphs
Find evidence in the frequency distribution, scatter plot, bar chart, or normal curve
Mean
The average
Mode
The most frequent score
Median
The middle number
Range
Smallest number subtracted from the largest number (big-small)
Standard Deviation
A measure of variance in scores
Skewness
Asymmetry of scores, follow negative or positive tail
Statistical Significance
P value, cut off 5% (.05)
Correlation Coefficients
Pearson r, closest to 1 is cut off
Effect Size
Strength of the relationship between its variables
IRB
A reviewed and approved study
Informed consent
Told about the experiment prior to agreeing to participate
Informed assent
Parental authorization for those 12-18
Confidentiality
Nothing traced back to participants
Debriefing
Told about the true nature of the study after it is completed
What are the options for point D, ethical guidelines?
Informed consent, informed assent, protection from harm, confidentiality, debriefing
Protection from harm
Humans come before science
