What is Pattern A – "Kill the Plane"?
A shutdown/emergency procedure used during forced landings, fires, or evacuation. Steps: 1) Throttle IDLE, 2) Mixture CUTOFF, 3) Fuel Selector OFF, 4) Master BAT & GEN OFF, 5) Magnetos OFF, 6) Declare Mayday/Evacuate if necessary.
When is Pattern A – "Kill the Plane" used?
During engine fire, forced landing, rejected takeoff with evacuation, securing the aircraft after flight.
What is Pattern B – "Start the Bird"?
The standard engine start sequence. Steps: 1) Parking brake SET, 2) Master BAT & GEN ON, 3) Area clear, 4) Choke ON/OFF based on temperature, 5) Start <10 sec, 6) Confirm oil pressure and set idle.
When is Pattern B – "Start the Bird" used?
Before engine start, including cold, hot, and flooded start scenarios.
What is Pattern C – "Ready for Takeoff"?
A checklist before entering the runway. Steps: 1) Flaps SET, 2) Trim SET, 3) QNH & Heading set, 4) Transponder ALT, 5) Magneto/carb heat checks, 6) Departure briefing, 7) Circuit & runway CLEAR, 8) Lights ON.
When is Pattern C – "Ready for Takeoff" used?
During Before Takeoff, Engine Run-Up, Before Line-Up, and Line-Up checklists.
What is Pattern D – "Abort & Climb Again"?
Go-around or recovery procedure. Steps: 1) Full power, 2) Pitch 65 KIAS, 3) Flaps to 15°, then UP, 4) Maintain control, 5) Climb out and rejoin.
When is Pattern D – "Abort & Climb Again" used?
During go-around, missed approach, stall recovery, or unstable approach.
What is Pattern E – "Smooth Descent"?
Controlled descent and approach setup. Steps: 1) ATIS & briefing, 2) QNH set, 3) Select fullest tank, 4) Lights ON, 5) Flaps in stages, 6) Maintain 60 KIAS, 7) Trim for stable approach.
When is Pattern E – "Smooth Descent" used?
During Before Descent, Approach, Final, and Landing Configuration.
What is Pattern F – "Tank Swap"?
Fuel tank switching procedure. Steps: 1) Fuel Pump ON, 2) Switch tank, 3) Fuel Pump OFF.
When is Pattern F – "Tank Swap" used?
During cruise every 30 minutes, and before approach or landing for fullest tank selection.
What is Pattern G – "See and Be Seen"?
Light, avionics, and transponder checks. Steps: 1) Lights ON/OFF as required, 2) Avionics ON/OFF, 3) Transponder ALT/STBY, 4) Radios set, 5) Traffic/circuit clear.
When is Pattern G – "See and Be Seen" used?
During taxi, takeoff, landing, shutdown, and securing the aircraft.
What is Pattern H – "Fly Clean and Stable"?
Ensuring a stable and safe final approach. Steps: 1) Maintain target speed (60 KIAS), 2) Final flaps set, 3) Descent smooth & stable, 4) Ready for go-around, 5) Trim adjusted.
When is Pattern H – "Fly Clean and Stable" used?
During Final Approach, Stall Recovery, Slow Flight, and Unstable Approach evaluation.
What is Pattern I – "Before Maneuvers"?
Safety check before training maneuvers. Steps: 1) 360° lookout, 2) Set safe altitude, 3) Check fuel tank & pump, 4) Announce intentions (if needed), 5) Configure and trim.
When is Pattern I – "Before Maneuvers" used?
Before slow flight, stalls, or any air exercises outside the circuit.
