Metering

JPEG

A smaller, processed image file that removes some data, adds processing, and is easy to store and use as a universal format.

RAW

A large, minimally processed image file that preserves much more data and gives greater control during editing.

JPEG Advantages

Smaller file size, easier to store, already processed, and widely compatible with different devices and programs.

RAW Advantages

More editable, allows penalty-free white balance adjustments, provides better highlight recovery, and gives more editing latitude.

White Balance in RAW

White balance can be changed during editing with little to no penalty because RAW files preserve the original image data.

Highlight Recovery

The ability to recover detail in very bright areas of a RAW image during post-processing.

Editing Latitude

The amount of flexibility a file gives you when making edits without significantly damaging image quality.
