Structure: Chronological
Summary: The story follows a chronological order as it starts with a husband and wife living nearby as an introduction, and then transitions to focusing on Rapunzel.
Commentary: By following a chronological order, it demonstrates the clear cause and effect of how Rapunzel’s fate was directly caused by those who came before her. It shows exactly why the conflict came to be as Rapunzel’s suppression was followed by a chain of actions caused by her parents and the enchantress.
Conflict: External
Summary: Rapunzel is trapped in the tower by the evil enchantress.
The conflict involves person vs person, as it´s the enchantress vs Rapunzel, while the enchantress attempts to suppress Rapunzel by isolating her, she inadvertently causes Rapunzel to rebel which eventually resolves the conflict as by banishing her from her tower, she was able to meet up with the king’s son again. This reveals how a controlled form of care cannot triumph over allowing for freewill.
Patterns:
Summary: The story repeatedly focused on Rapunzel’s hair through Gothel and the prince repeating,
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down thy hair"
Commentary: The overarching pattern throughout Rapunzel is her hair as it signified a shift from confinement towards freedom symbolically and physically; when she was captured her hair was used to serve Gothel, and when she was released, it was cut by Gothel as well. Thus, this illustrates how Rapunzel's hair was a symbol of captivity to independence.
Meaning of the Work:
Summary: The older generation’s expectations of young women can lead to suppression and conflict.
Commentary: The older generation tends to impose traditional values originating from their societal context onto young women, which for young women who desire autonomy or self-purpose, this has the potential to arise conflict between themselves or their family. When the voices and ambitions of young women are suppressed, they may feel the need to conform to rebel completely from their family as Rapunzel did, which is why it’s crucial that generational expectations don’t exceed guidance.
