Primary Colors
Colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors.
Secondary Colors
A color resulting from the mixing of two primary colors.
Intermediate Colors
A color created by mixing a primary color with a neighboring secondary color on the color wheel.
Analogous Colors
Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.
Monochromatic
A color scheme that uses only one color with its various shades, tints, and tones.
Complementary Colors
Colors that are across from each other on the color wheel.
Tint
Created when white is added to a hue.
Tone
The lightness or darkness of a color.
Shade
A hue with black added.
Cured
When paint has fully hardened.
Flat Color
Solid, unshaded hues without any gradients or textures.
Dry Brushing
A painting technique in which a paint brush holds very little paint.
Background
The area that lies furthest from the viewer.
Informal Gridding
Dividing the space unequally as to not create a symmetrical design.
Formal Gridding
Dividing the space equally by measuring to keep everything symmetrical.
Impressionism
Captured fleeting moments of light and color.
Post Impressionism
More expressive and individualistic approach.
Assemblage
Art made by assembling everyday objects.
Asymmetrical Balance
A composition that is not symmetrical but balances its visual weight on both sides.
Symmetrical Balance
Balance in a composition where either side is equally weighted.
Variety
Achieved by arranging elements in a composition in a variety of manners; adds interest by using contrasting elements.
Unity
Occurs when all elements combine to make a balanced, complete whole.
Perspective
A technique used to create the illusion of 3-D space on a 2-D surface.
Atmospheric Perspective
Used to create the illusion of depth and distance by depicting objects that are further away in less detailed ways.
Emphasis
The first point your eyes look to in the artwork.
Movement
The motion your eyes have from the emphasis.
Foreground
The portion of a work that appears closest to the viewer.
Middleground
The area between foreground and background.
Wet Brushing
A painting technique where a brush is used with a significant amount of paint and/or water.
Transparent
The quality of allowing light to pass through.
Opaque
Lets little to no light pass through; you cannot see through them.
Heavy Pressure Blend
Applying more pressure to the material (oil pastel).
Light Pressure Blend
Applying less pressure to the material (oil pastel).
Stippling
Using the edge of pastel to make dots of color with soft hitting touches on the paper.
Scumbling
Controlled scribbled marks.
Sgraffito
Apply base color then lay second color over 1st w/ broad side of oil pastel, designs can be scratched into surface.
Impasto
Process or technique of laying on paint thickly so it stands out from the surface.
Broken Color
Effect of blending colors optically, not or on surface palette.
Mixed Media
Artworks that combine two or more different materials or techniques.
Collage
A technique where various materials are adhered to a surface to create a new artwork.
