Allusion
Referring to a work of literature, a famous event, person or place in order to link ideas.
Analogy
An extended comparison using two things that are similar. E.G. Animal Farm
Assonance
Repetition or similarity of vowel sounds in a group of words. E.G. line/find
Connotation
The emotional meaning or association of a word. E.G. Pig - dirty, smelly.
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds within words or across words E.G. He struck a streak of bad luck.
Figurative language
The use of figures of speech like similes and metaphors.
Foreshadowing
Events or descriptions that hint at coming events.
Imagery
Use of figurative or descriptive language to create an image.
Rhyme
Repetition of identical or closely similar sounds. E.G. whirl, swirl.
Rhythm
Sound pattern created by the repetition of regular patterns. E.G. iambic pentameter.
Run-on-line
A line of poetry that has not punctuation at the end.
Stream of conscience
The story is told through a random flow of character thoughts.
Symbol
Object that represents a greater idea or feeling. E.g. dove = peace
