Saturated Solution
A solution that contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute possible at a given temperature.
Unsaturated Solution
A solution that contains less dissolved solute than the maximum that is possible at that temperature.
Supersaturated Solution
A solution that contains more dissolved solute than the maximum possible at a given temperature.
Factors Affecting Solubility
Factors include temperature and the nature of the solute and solvent.
Temperature Effect on Solubility of Solids
In general, most solids become more soluble as temperature increases.
Temperature Effect on Solubility of Gases
Gases generally become less soluble as temperature increases.
Concentrated Solution
A solution that contains a high amount of dissolved solute.
Dilute Solution
A solution that contains a low amount of dissolved solute.
Solubility Rules
Guidelines that predict whether certain ionic substances will dissolve in water.
Sodium Acetate Supersaturation Demonstration
An experiment demonstrating a supersaturated solution by dissolving excess solute at high temperature and cooling it carefully.
