Twist Dyeing - Materials
Silk dye
cotton
stick
tape & paintbrush
Twist Dyeing - Method
Twist cotton until it turns back on itself & twist around a stick & tape down
dab fabric to wet it
use paintbrush to paint cotton with silk dye - apply enough to get into the twists
allow to dry before unwinding
iron for 5 mins on high to set the dye
Natural Dyeing - Materials
100% cotton
natural dye ingredients (turmeric, cabbage, black beans, tea)
Natural Dyeing - Method
Mix boiling water with dye ingredient
leave to boil for 20mins before straining / let sit for 24 hours
Soak 100% cotton in salt water for 15mins
place fabric in dye solution for at least 30 mins
rinse and allow to fully dry
Shibori Pole Wrapping - Tools
Silk fabric
Silk dye
PVC pipe/jar
Plastic string
masking tape
Shibori Pole Wrapping - Method
Fold silk in half & tape to top of pipe on a 45 degree angle
Tape a piece of string to the jar & start wrapping the string tightly around the silk at 5mm intervals
After 5-6 wraps, push the silk & string up to make small pleats
continue wrapping, then tape string to pipe
Dye the silk with silk dyes and paintbrush
leave to dry before undoing string
Tie Dye - Tools
Cotton
Elastic bands
Silk dye or Procion dye
Tie dye - Method
Fold fabric using method of choice
Pre-wet fabric to enable the dye to spread
Soak in dye for 30 mins (pastel shades), or 45 mins (deep shades)
remove elastic bands and rinse out dye
Dry on rack, then iron to set the dye
Tie Dye Technique - Stripe
fold fabric up like a fan, and then wrap elastic bands around the fabric, around 1-2 cm apart
Tie Dye Technique - Concentric Circles
tie a marble in the middle of the fabric and then continue tying elastic bands two cm apart.
Tie Dye Technique - Crumpling/marble
Scrunch fabric and tie with elastic bands
Tie Dye Technique - Circles
secure marbles to the fabric with elastic bands.
Tie Dye Technique - Swirl
Pinch fabric in the centre of the fabric and slowly twist in a spiral direction. Once you can’t twist the fabric any more, secure with elastic bands
Tie Dye Technique - Itajime (Triangle)
Fan fold the fabric in 4 wide sections
Fold one end of the rectangle into a triangle, and then fold the triangle back and forth creating a stack of folded triangles
Place triangle between plastic squares and secure with rubber bands
Tie Dye Technique - Twist
Hold two opposite corners of the fabric and twist as if you were wringing a towel. Twist until the fabric forms into a ball. Secure twist with elastic bands
Fabric Vessel - Tools
Light weight fabrics e.g. netting, tulle, wool fibres, lace, silk, string/thread
Balloon
Watered down PVA glue
Water pot
Fabric Vessel - Method
Find light weight fabrics and fibres
Place an inflated balloon knot side down on a paint pot
Soak fabrics in PVA mix and drape over the balloon
Let fabric dry before popping the balloon and peeling the vessel off
Art Elements
Colour, line, shape, texture, tone
Art Principles
Balance, unity, variety, rhythm, repetition, emphasis, space
Colour
Art element
Primary colours
Secondary colours
Tertiary colours ( 2:1 ratio of primary colours)
Colour scheme
Complementary colours (opposite each other on colour wheel)
Harmonious colours (next to each other on colour wheel)
Monochromatic colour scheme (one colour with different tints and tones)
Line
Art element
horizontal
Vertical
Diagonal
Shape
Art element
Geometric
Organic
Symbolic (e.g. arrows, hearts)
Tone
Art element
tone (darker)
tint (lighter)
High key subject (subject with mostly light tones)
Low key subject (subject with mostly dark tones)
Full scale subject (subject with full range of tones)
Texture
Art element
Real textures (actually exist, you can feel them when you touch the design)
Simulated textures (illusion to make realistic)
Unity
Art principle
created through compositional structure
achieved by creating an attachment between each of the elements
Proportion
Art principle
Relationship between the size of various objects in an artwork
Proportion can help to imply emphasis
Repetition and Rhythm
Art principle
continuity and order
results in a harmonious balance
Rhythm is created through ordered repetition
similar elements
pattern
Balance
Art principle
Symmetrical balance (design elements are mirrored on the central axis)
Asymmetrical balance (opposing elements on different sides of the axis are evenly weighted. Do not have to have the same shape or size, but must have the same visual weight.
Emphasis
Art principle
create a point of interest
focal point
Achieved through placement, scale, detail, isolation, contrast, or line
