Dividend
The number that is being divided; for example, in the problem 37 divided by 5, the number 37 is the dividend.
Divisor
The number that you are dividing by; for example, in the problem 37/5, the number 5 is the divisor.
Remainder
The amount left over when a number cannot be divided evenly into groups; it is denoted with the letter R.
Divide
The first step in the long division process where you determine how many times the divisor fits into a portion of the dividend.
Multiply
The second step in the long division process; for example, multiplying the quotient digit 7 by the divisor 5 to get 35.
Subtract
The third step in the long division process where you find the difference between the dividend value and the multiplied product (e.g., 37−35=2).
Bring down
The step in long division where you move the next digit of the dividend down to continue the division process.
37 divided by 5
A division problem that results in a quotient of 7 and a remainder of 2 (7 R 2).
98 divided by 4
A division problem that results in a quotient of 24 and a remainder of 2 (24 R 2).
64 divided by 3
A division problem that results in a quotient of 21 and a remainder of 1 (21 R 1).
84 divided by 4
A division problem that results in a quotient of 21 with no remainder; the transcript notes you should not write remainder zero.
