Anointing
It came from the Latin word “inungere”, from in-upon the ungere means __, smear with oil, typically as part of a religious ceremony.
This is also being used in many occasions like to nominate or choose (someone) as successors to or leading candidate for a position.
The Sacrament of Anointing
This is a sacrament which through laying on of hands, the prayer of faith and the anointing with blessed oil, provides the sick with Christ’s healing grace of the Holy Spirit.
Christ passed on his own ministry of healing the sick and the infirm to the apostles and the church.
Changing it’s aim to serving sick, not only the dying, and hence the change of its name to “Anointing of the sick, instead of Extreme Unction.”

Effects:
trust in God in encouraged.
strength is given to resist the temptation of the evil one and anxiety about death.
a return to physical health may even follow if it will be beneficial to the sic person’s salvation.

It’s the Eucharist given to the dying Christion.
It vividly pictures Christ as leading and accompanying in his own saving works.
