Why does 5 round up?
Someone decided it a long time ago, and now we all just do it.
If a student shows you that they got the correct answer, but their method only worked coincidentally, what should you do?
Show them a counter example!
What is a counter example?
An example to prove that the student’s method DOESN’T work.
RIRL: A distance is 6.2 miles. What is the range that this distance could actually be in?
Any number between 6.15 and 6.24
RIRL: The population of Billings is 120,000. What is the range that this population could actually be in?
Any number between 115,000 and 124,000.
RIRL: If I have 8 kg of sugar, how much do I actually have?
Any amount between 7.5 and 8.4.
RIRL: If I have 8.0 kg of sugar, how much do I actually have?
Any amount between 7.95 and 8.04.
When rounding, which zero is always being rounded from?
The smallest!

Equal divisions of a whole
Equal slices of pizza
