Diastole
The relaxation (filling) phase of the cardiac cycle.
Systole
The contraction phase of the cardiac cycle where contraction creates pressure, opening the exit doors (pulmonary and aortic valves).
Heart Sounds
Sounds made by the closure of heart valves, where one heartbeat consists of 'Lubb' and 'Dupp'.
Lubb
The systolic heart sound caused by the closure of the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid).
Dupp
The diastolic heart sound caused by the closure of the semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonic).
Atrioventricular Valves
The heart valves comprising the mitral and tricuspid valves, the closure of which causes the 'Lubb' heart sound.
Semilunar Valves
The heart valves comprising the aortic and pulmonic valves, the closure of which causes the 'Dupp' heart sound.
Diastole (Right Side)
Phase in which blood returns to the heart via the superior and inferior vena cava and flows from the right atrium into the right ventricle, with the tricuspid valve open and pulmonary valve closed.
Diastole (Left Side)
Phase in which blood from the pulmonary veins flows from the left atrium into the left ventricle, with the mitral valve open and aortic valve closed.
Systole (Right Side)
Phase in which blood from the right ventricle flows to the lungs, with the tricuspid valve closed and pulmonary valve open.
Systole (Left Side)
Phase in which blood from the left ventricle flows through the aorta to the body, with the mitral valve closed and aortic valve open.
