Bathing suits
Males must bring plain, mostly navy or black swim shorts. Females must bring a mostly navy or black one-piece bathing suit. Females also have the option to bring mostly navy or black swim shorts.
Items ALLOWED during the academic year
Cellphones, laptops, headphones or earbuds, larger fans, 'civilian clothing', comforter, mattress pad, and large storage bin (27-gallon bin - can be clear or solid in color) for snacks/clothes/personal items.
Items NOT PERMITTED during Orientation only:
Cellphones, hairdryers, hair clippers, electric razors, snacks, food items (unless for medical purposes), comforters, mattress pad
Items NOT PERMITTED for freshman at any time
Mini fridges, TVs, radios/speakers, or similar electronic devices.
Female Cadets Hair Standards
Hair shall not fall below the lower edge of the back collar or extend more than two inches beyond the front of the ears. Bangs must not fall into the line of sight. Long hair shall be secured in a bun, ponytail, or similar style that does not extend beyond the bottom edge of the collar. Hair must be neatly fastened or pinned.
Male Cadets Hair Standards
Hair must be clean-cut, tapered, and evenly trimmed. Hair on top shall not exceed one-eighth inch in length (clipper size #1). Hair shall not touch the ears or collar. Beards and goatees are not authorized. Cadets must be clean-shaven at all times.
Youngie Knowledge
Youngie knowledge enlightens cadets to the rules, traditions, regulations, customs, and policies associated with Massachusetts Maritime Academy and maritime-related industries, in general. Memorization of 'Youngie Knowledge' is an undergraduate requirement.

Shipboard Emergency Signals: Fire and Emergency
A continuous blast of the ship's whistle for a period of not less than ten (10) seconds, supplemented by a comparable tone on the general alarm - followed by a descriptive PA system announcement.
Shipboard Emergency Signals: Abandon Ship
A succession of more than six short blasts, followed by one long blast on the ship's whistle, supplemented by a comparable tone on the general alarm - followed by a descriptive PA system announcement.
Shipboard Emergency Signals: Man Overboard
A succession of three prolonged blasts of the ship's whistle, supplemented by a comparable tone on the General Alarm, followed by one short blast of the ship's whistle to indicate the person is overboard to starboard or two short blasts of the ship's whistle to indicate the person is overboard to port.
Shipboard Emergency Signals: Security Alert or Breach
A succession of blasts on the ship's whistle - prolonged, short, short, prolonged - three times, supplemented by a comparable signal on the General Alarm - followed by the spoken word X-Ray on the PA system.
Shipboard Emergency Signals: Dismissal
Three short blasts on the ship's whistle, supplemented by a comparable tone on the General Alarm.
