Common/Ballad Meter
A rhythmic pattern in poetry consisting of 8 syllables (Iambic Tetrameter) or 6 syllables (Iambic Trimeter).
Free Verse
Poetry that does not conform to regular meter or rhyme schemes.
Iambic Pentameter
A poetic meter where each line consists of five iambic feet (10 syllables).
Iambic Tetrameter
A poetic meter where each line consists of four iambic feet (8 syllables).
Iambic Trimeter
A poetic meter where each line consists of three iambic feet (6 syllables).
Enjambment
The continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next without a pause.
Haiku
A traditional Japanese poem consisting of three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
Imagiste
A movement in poetry that favored clear, precise images and direct language.
