Democracy
a system of government commonly understood as “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
Athenian Democracy
the first known democracy that began in Athens, Greece around 500 BCE. Eligible citizens voted directly on issues such as taxes and wars.
Cleisthenes
a nobleman from Athens known as the “Father of Democracy” for organizing the first democracy of the people.
Direct Democracy
a type of democracy where eligible citizens directly vote on major issues and participate in discussions.
Features of Democracy
power comes from the people, leaders are chosen with public consent, majority decisions are followed, minority rights are protected, basic human rights are respected, elections are free and fair, everyone is equal under the law, laws are applied fairly, government powers are limited, many voices and groups are allowed, and people value cooperation and compromise.
Political Community
a community made up of a government accountable to its citizens and citizens who live under its laws. It protects the rights of people while building just systems.
Human Dignity
an individual or group’s sense of self-respect, self-worth, and physical and psychological integrity and empowerment. It means living with integrity, staying true to values, and standing for what is right.
Examples of Human Dignity
leaving situations where one is not treated well, ending unsafe relationships, helping those in need, standing up for what is right, and saying no to things that go against personal values.
Human Rights
the basic rights every person has simply because they are human. These rights ensure that all people live with dignity, safety, and freedom.
Bill of Rights (1987 Constitution)
protects human rights in the Philippines.
Examples of Human Rights
right to life, education, speech, equal treatment, religion, privacy, fair trial, safety, work, and vote.
Common Good
making choices that benefit everyone, not only a few. It involves compassion, fairness, selfless service, and aiming for what is just and good for all.
Pakikipagkapwa
a Filipino value that reminds people to act with compassion and fairness by putting others first.
Education
the various ways through which knowledge is passed on to other members of society. Knowledge can include factual data, skills, norms, and values.
Formal Education
the complete educational ladder that children go through from childhood up to adulthood.
Alternative Education
forms of education not controlled by the government, including private education, indigenous education, informal learning, and self-directed learning.
Open Education
a form of education through online courses made possible by advances in the internet.
Education as a Human Right
the right of every person to receive education, supported by international agreements and conventions.
Importance of Education
basic education helps children gain literacy, numeracy, social skills, and life skills needed to become active members of society. It also addresses the lack of access to education experienced by many children around the world.
