What is the difference between food security and food insecurity?
food security = always enough safe, healthy food
food insecurity = not always having access to enough safe, healthy food
What are the main U.S. government programs that increase food security?
SNAP, WIC, National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Meals on Wheels, food banks/pantries
How are organic foods produced differently than conventional foods
Organic = no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, sewage sludge, GMOs, or irradiation.
Why do people choose organic foods?
Lower pesticide intake, support sustainable farming, possibly improve nutrition

Micronutrient deficiencies
What happens when energy intake falls below needs?
Slowed growth, weakness, muscle fat/loss, weaker immune system, higher risk of disease, possible death

Kills insects and bacteria, extends shelf life. Food must have the Radura label
What causes most foodborne illnesses?
Bacteria and viruses. Spread by feces, infected people, or cross-contamination
