Commutative Property

A math rule where the order of numbers changes, represented by $a + b = b + a$ for addition and $ab = ba$ for multiplication. Memory trick: The Commute.

Associative Property

A math rule where the grouping of numbers changes, represented by $(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)$ for addition and $(ab)c = a(bc)$ for multiplication. Memory trick: The Hangout (who groups together).

Distributive Property

A math rule represented by $a(b + c) = ab + ac$, where a value is passed out to everything inside the parentheses so the parentheses disappear. Memory trick: Passing it out.

Identity Property

A math rule where a number keeps its identity after an operation, represented by $a + 0 = a$ for addition and $a(1) = a$ for multiplication. Memory trick: The Mirror.

Inverse Property

A math rule that uses opposites or reciprocals to cancel out, represented by $5 + (-5) = 0$ for addition and $5 \times \frac{1}{5} = 1$ for multiplication. Memory trick: The Cancel Out.

Zero Property

A math rule stating that multiplying any value by zero equals zero, represented by $a(0) = 0$. Memory trick: The Black hole / ultimate eraser.
