45 seconds to 1 minute.
Setting time for normal-set alginate
Typically 2 to 3 minutes.
Setting time for fast-set alginate
About 1 to 2 minutes.
Gypsum
A material mainly used to make dental casts or models.
Exothermic process
A process that releases heat, such as the setting of gypsum.
Disinfecting impressions
Impressions should be disinfected and wrapped in a damp paper towel before sending them to the lab.
Working time
The time available to manipulate the material before it begins to set.
Gelation
The process by which the material transitions from a fluid to a gel-like state during setting.
Maxillary cast trimming
Trimmed to form a U-shape.
Mandibular cast trimming
Trimmed to form a V-shape.
Wax bite registration
A technique used to capture the bite relationship between upper and lower arches.
Stock trays
Pre-manufactured trays available in various sizes.
Tray adhesives
Substances used to help alginate adhere to the tray.
Custom trays
Trays made to fit an individual patient’s mouth for more accurate impressions.
Agar
A reversible hydrocolloid material used for impressions.
Syneresis
The process where water is expelled from the gel, causing it to shrink.
Inverted pour method
A technique in gypsum model making where the impression is poured first with thicker gypsum, then a second pour with a thinner mix.
Gag reflex prevention
Use smaller amounts of material and have the patient breathe through their nose to prevent gagging.
Polishing a cast
Can be done with a dental polishing stone, a soft brush, or a buffing wheel.
