After the civil war the freed african americans had to rebuild their lives. They wanted to own land, get education, and get family back , The freedmens bureeau helped provide things to help them get back on their feet. But white southerners tried to restore domination like make the black codes to restrict blackc labor rights, the KKK attacked black americans, sharecropping that kept black families depending white landowners. But through violence and political supression white southerners reestablished almost all control over the south reversed many of the gains that african amerians had after slavery was over.

During WW1 a lot of african americans served in the military in segregated unit, at home black workers filled industrial jobs while white men worked at war, Despite all of their hard work the black soldiers that came back and the racial hostility got worse.
