Rule 1
Atoms of a pure element have an oxidation state of 0.
Rule 2
Monatomic ions: oxidation state is the same as the charge
Rule 3
H is +1 in a non metallic compound
Rule 4
O is -2 in a covalent compound (H2O) EXCEPT in peroxides (H2O2, oxidation state of -1)
Rule 5
Atom with the greater electronegativity gets the electrons in a
binary compound. Ex: in H2S, S is -2, but in SF6, S is +6.
Rule 6
Sum of oxidation states is 0 for an uncharged molecule, and
equals the charge for an ion.
