Heograpiya
The study of the physical characteristics of the earth and the relationship of humans to their environment.
Absolute Location
A specific and fixed location using coordinates or an address, such as Davao City at 7.19∘N,125.46∘E.
Relative Location
A location described based on other places, landmarks, directions, or distance, such as Davao City being west of Samal Island.
Lugar (Place)
Refers to the unique characteristics of a location, divided into physical characteristics (climate, landforms) and human characteristics (culture, language).
Human-Environment Interaction
A theme of geography that explores how humans live in, adapt to, depend on, and modify their environment, such as through urbanization.
Paggalaw (Movement)
The flow of people, products, and ideas, exemplified by the Davao Port for goods or PUJs for passenger transport.
Formal Region
A region with official or clear boundaries, such as the provinces of Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental.
Functional Region
A region organized around a center that serves a primary function, such as Davao City serving as a center for commerce and trade.
Perceptual Region
A region based on people's views or perceptions, such as calling the Davao Region "Durian Country."
Kultura (Culture)
The total way of life of a group of people, including language, beliefs, traditions, symbols, and livelihood.
Enculturation
The process of developing or learning a culture, such as the practice of using "Mano po" and "Opo."
Communal (Characteristic of Culture)
The trait meaning culture is shared by members of society through activities like fiestas, rituals, and bayanihan.
Integration (Characteristic of Culture)
The trait where culture is an interconnected whole; for example, how OFWs affect the economy, family, and customs.
Dynamic (Characteristic of Culture)
The trait indicating that culture constanty changes due to interaction and the passage of time.
Ilawod
Communities living in the plains, coastal areas, or near rivers that rely on fishing and boat transportation.
Moro Groups
Cultural groups typically identified with the Ilawod lifestyle, including the Iranun, Kagan, Maranao, Maguindanaon, Sama, and Tausug.
Ilaya
Communities living in the mountains or high areas who have maintained more traditional cultures due to limited external contact.
Lumad Groups
Indigenous groups identified with the Ilaya lifestyle, such as the Ata, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Bagobo-Klata, Matigsalug, and Obu-Manuvu.
Barter
The exchange of products to obtain goods that are not available in a person's own local area.
Environmental Determinism
A theory by Baron de Montesquieu stating that the physical environment, including climate and resources, primarily dictates human behavior and development.
Possibilism
A theory by Paul Vidal de la Blache stating that humans have the capacity to adapt, innovate, and use technology to change their situation regardless of nature's constraints.
